Materials and treatment

Materials used

We have strived to ensure that all parts of our products are made from the highest quality materials. However, that doesn’t mean you need not take care to maintain your product’s beauty and quality for many years to come. UV radiation or prolonged periods of rain, for example, are serious threats to any outdoor furniture. However, if you follow our care and maintenance instructions, your furniture will look as good and beautiful as new for many years to come.

Our products are typically made using the following materials:

  1. carbon steel for the load bearing frame
  2. aluminium for pergolas
  3. stainless steel for handles, champagne bucket holders, back cushion holders, footrests and metal parts of elbow rests
  4. solid (typically) tropical hardwood for smart centre consoles and frames
  5. waterproof and top-quality PERMACOOL fabric for upholstery elements and mattresses
  6. high quality sponges and foams of different hardness for upholstery elements
  7. plywood for certain upholstery elements

Treatment and maintenance of the furniture

Metallic elements

Generally, the surface of carbon steel elements is coated with a thick layer of powder coating, which does not require special attention and prevent any rust for many years. Increased protection of these elements should be considered only if they are subject to serious external mechanical damage. In this case, you may want to repair or replace the item.

The stainless steel elements also do not require very regular treatment, but it is of course worth wiping the surfaces with a metal polish from time to time.

The aluminium pergola structure is fully resistant to rust. Individual elements are also coated with a high-quality powder coating, but while the powder coating on carbon steel elements has a protective function, this is not the case here.

Fabric and upholstery elements

All our furniture is made using Spradling® fabric. Spradling® is an expert in outdoor fabrics, so we offer our customers the best (marine grade) fabrics.

Wooden structures

Of all materials, wood is the one that is most capable of changing its shape, form and texture under the influence of external elements. In order to keep our products as beautiful as possible, we use the best tropical woods, but a lot depends on the finish. We apply a total of 5 coats of surface treatment to our furniture, so, with proper treatment, our wooden surfaces will retain their beauty for many years.

It's important to stress that UV radiation is the greatest risk to any outdoor wooden furniture, so, for roofless designs, it’s worth providing some shade, while full exposure to the sun for long months should be avoided in any case. Although our surface treatment process also protects against sunlight, furniture that is constantly in the sun will require more frequent treatment.

If a product with no roof is installed in an area with a sunshade or in a shaded area, it is recommended that it receives a proper surface treatment every 2 months, which should take only a short time of about half an hour.
For furniture exposed to full sunshine, we recommend surface treatment once a month to ensure that your ALTANURA product will shine with the same beauty for many years to come. For products with pergola, treatment may be sufficient every 2 months, but in cases of increased exposure to heat and sunlight (countries in the Middle East), treatment once a month might be better.
